Introductory Blacksmithing

5 Hour One-on-One Session ($250)

Learn blacksmithing by going hands-on one on one with Tim Peel-Wickstrom, a professional blacksmith in Magrath, AB. You will learn how to forge several simple components and leave the class with several completed projects: a set of nails, a set of wall hooks and S-hooks, and a keychain bottle opener are some examples.

The class covers basic shop safety, operation of a propane gas forge, and core hammering techniques. These blacksmithing techniques produce tools, ornamental wrought ironwork, forged artwork and historic hardware.

Required protective equipment:

– Sturdy, closed-toe footwear (CSA approved steel-toed footwear preferred)
– CSA approved clear safety glasses
– earplugs or muffs
– leather or natural fiber gloves
– low cost leather apron (optional)
– natural fibre clothing that covers arms and legs

A liability waiver form must be completed before the class begins.

“Thanks Tim for enhancing my teenage son’s interest in forging!  He signed on for an introduction to the world of forging and loved it.  You were a very knowledgeable and patient teacher.  My son was able to learn a number of different techniques, all with safety in mind.  He looks forward to coming back to learn more.”

“I’ve recently wanted to try out blacksmithing, and Tim was awesome to learn from! Had a quick 5 hour session where we discussed how metal moves while hot and proper hammering techniques. I had a fantastic time and will very likely go back in the future! The best part was making some useable hooks and a horseshoe.”
