This t-shirt is truly Canadian: socially-conscious manufacturing, printing and design all happened on Canadian soil to promote a message of unity in a time of division.
This environmental inspired shirt is made from a comfortable, soft cotton fabric that is a unisex fit. The art print is hand drawn by Canadian artist Lorinda Peel-Wickstrom, whose focus is on “biophilia”- the love of nature and our connection to it. She believes in slow fashion, slow craft, and ethical and sustainable clothing.
“My hope is to remind us of our inherit interconnectedness to each other and our environment – as technology, the pace of life and the mantra of constant “progress” increase separation. I noticed the extent to which authorities and media push a mindset of segregation and fear in this time of strife, and as a result I’ve had to consciously reflect on which wolf I am feeding: fear or hope. This piece of art is the result of my reflections.
May we feel strength from our roots, and find harmony and balance as we navigate our paths forward.”
When looking into sustainable clothing, I came to realize that it wasn’t as simple as choosing bamboo clothing over cotton. Most bamboo clothing that’s available is not what I would consider truly sustainable. Yet, the price is quite a bit higher. I would feel better about paying the higher price if I knew that my dollar was supporting the right practices, but in this case that wasn’t clear so I chose to utilize a product that was more economical, yet still supporting local as much as possible (which I believe to be a key component of sustainability). This is a learning process for me, and I will continue to make the best choices I can.
